H101- Salto from Fly Fly (Aerofever, JSB etc...)Name: H101 Salto
Sold by: Miscellaneous Manufacturer: Fly Fly Category: Aerobatic sailplane Material: Fuselage: Composite Wings: Ribs, full covered Wingspan: 2.68m Length: 1.18m Weight: 2.2kg Price: 185€ Link to the Shop: Not available anymore The Salto belongs already to the oldtimer of the aerobatic sailplanes, years ago he was overtaken by the Swift or the Fox and wasn't competive against them anymore. Normaly all aerobatic sailplanes are using a normal tail, but the Salto uses a V-tail which stands him out of the crowd.
Beside of that, he has a breath taking flight image and is always a nice seen guest on the flying fields. My setup:I bought this model used, so I can't tell which servos are in the wings and which battery is used, I only know that there are four 4000mAh NiMh cells inside.
On the V-tail are two Multiplex Mini HV servos which are working evry well. On a V-tail it is always important to have very exact servos, but they don't need to be strong. The tow coupling is put in the nose and a cheap chinese servo is operating it. Ar receiver I'm using a Orange Rx R710. |

Build up:
As already told i can't tell much about the building, but there is many to ready about highly variable quality of the kit in the internet. Lucky me my wings are straight and there are no other problems.
but what you should do, is to change the linkage of the V-tail, the original ones are way too weak.

Flight characteristics:Against my concerns about so big planes from china, I must say that I'm enthusiastic. Of course, you can'tawait a quality of a small manufactory and also the flight characteristics could be better, but the price / performace ratio is perfect! Only the longitudal dihedral seems not to be perfect, I had to trim down elevator for a few mm. What I like is, that this Salto was not distorted with spoilers, because the original one also don't have them. The big brother uses rotating brake flaps and a chute for slwoing down, but this wouldn't be possible in that scale. For landing you still can use spoilerons, that works quite good but is not really necessary. For thermal use he is not the best one, but soemtimes you can find something stay on the same level, but barely something that gets you up, but for that he wasn't designed.
In aerobatic sailing he is then full in his element. he accelerates fast and stays with that speed, only the gliding angle upside down isn't the best. Despite the V-tail he stays very stable upside down and also negativ loops aren't a problem if you have a little feeling for the wings. The ailerons have scale dimensions, so the roll rate could be better and can not be compared to a Fox, but ok, that's scale. Also the sensitivity for elevator and rudder is scale like very high and you only need small travel ways. It is also possible to fly good looking turns with the V-tail once you know how it works. There is no reason for blandish things, the Salto isn't an aerobatic machine like a Fox or Swift, but he has that wonderful image, also his disadvantages in aerobatics aren't so big that a good pilot could not obliterate them. As so often, it depends on the pilot ;). However, it feels so good to have something other then the uniformity of aerobatic sailplanes... |
Conclusion:
Target group: Intermediate
Finishing: N.a.
Flight characteristics: Good
Price / performance ratio: Good (seems to vary)
Friends of the Salto in that scale can go for it. If you buy over the internet you should make use of your right to return and if you buy it at your local hobby shop make sure to check the kit before taking it with you.
